Connect another IMAP account
Any provider with IMAP works. For the common German providers Routira knows the servers; for others you enter them once.
Before you start
- Your full email address.
- The password for mail apps. Many providers want an app password (sometimes called an app-specific or application password) instead of your normal one, especially with two-factor authentication. Your provider's security settings create it.
- IMAP turned on. Some providers, such as GMX and WEB.DE, need it switched on in their web settings first.
- For providers Routira doesn't know: the IMAP and SMTP server names from your provider's help for mail apps.
Steps
- In Routira, open Settings › Mail accounts (or the Bring your mail step when you first sign in) and choose Other IMAP account.
- Enter your full email address and the password in Password or app password.
- Choose Connect. For GMX, WEB.DE, IONOS, T-Online, Strato, Fastmail and OVHcloud, Routira finds the servers by itself.
- If Routira doesn't know the servers for your address, it says so. Choose Enter server settings and fill in the IMAP server, the SMTP server and their ports, then choose Connect again.
- Your newest mail arrives first. Routira says when the last 30 days are ready, and older mail follows in the background.
Server settings
Routira only uses encrypted connections. Most providers use these ports:
| Port | Security | |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming (IMAP) | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | 587 | STARTTLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP), alternative | 465 | SSL/TLS |
The user name is almost always your full email address. Unencrypted connections (IMAP on 143 without STARTTLS, SMTP on 25) aren't supported.
Not supported yet
- Gmail and Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 (Outlook.com, Exchange Online) connect by signing in with Google or Microsoft, not over IMAP. They're coming; please don't connect them over IMAP in the meantime.
- POP3-only mailboxes. Routira needs IMAP to keep both sides in sync.
Good to know
- Both sides stay in sync: read state, flags, moves and folders, so your other mail apps see what you did in Routira.
- Mail you send from Routira is filed into your Sent folder.
- If you change the password at your provider, Routira can't sign in any more and asks you to reconnect.
- Disconnecting in Routira stops sync right away, and Routira deletes its copies within 30 days. Your mail at your provider is never touched.
If something goes wrong
- The login is refused. Check that IMAP is turned on at your provider, and whether it wants an app password. Try the same address and password in your provider's webmail.
- Routira asks for server settings. Your provider's help for mail apps lists them, usually on a page called "IMAP settings" or "Set up a mail app".
- The server can't be reached. Check the server name and port for typos, and that the port matches the security (993 with SSL/TLS, 587 with STARTTLS).
