Good to know: iCloud Mail is the newest connection in Routira. If a step doesn't match what you see, write to hello@routira.com and we'll sort it out with you.

Before you start#

  • Your iCloud Mail address (@icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com).
  • Two-factor authentication on your Apple Account. Apple only offers app-specific passwords with it, and most accounts have it already.

Steps#

  1. In Routira, open Settings › Mail accounts (or the Bring your mail step when you first sign in) and choose iCloud Mail.
  2. Sign in at account.apple.com with your Apple Account.
  3. Go to Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords. Choose the plus button and name it “Routira”.
  4. Copy the password. Apple shows it once. It has 16 letters in four groups, like abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop.
  5. Back in Routira, enter your iCloud address, paste the App-specific password and choose Connect iCloud.
  6. Your newest mail arrives first. Routira says when the last 30 days are ready, and older mail follows in the background.

Good to know#

  • Your Apple Account password won't work here. Only the app-specific password does. It opens iCloud Mail, Contacts and Calendars, not your Apple Account, Photos or iCloud Drive. Routira uses it only for Mail.
  • Routira stores the password encrypted in the EU and never shows it again.
  • Both sides stay in sync: read state, flags, moves and folders, so your iPhone and Mac see what you did in Routira.
  • Mail that iCloud moves by its own rules is marked as moved by iCloud, not by Routira.
  • To stop Routira's access, revoke the password at account.apple.com, or disconnect the account in Routira. Disconnecting stops sync right away, and Routira deletes its copies within 30 days. Your mail at iCloud is never touched.

If something goes wrong#

  • Routira says it doesn't look like an app-specific password. You probably entered your Apple Account password. Create an app-specific password as in steps 2 to 4.
  • The password is refused. App-specific passwords stop working when you change your Apple Account password. Create a new one and connect again.
  • You don't see App-Specific Passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account first.
